While some kids are excited about braces because they know some \u201ccool\u201d teenagers who have them, others may worry about how braces might look or feel.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mom and Dad are likely preoccupied with financial concerns of orthodontic treatment along with all the questions any parent has about such a major decision about their child\u2019s health. Carolina Complete Dental is here to share some information to help the family start talking about braces \u2013 together.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Do Kids Need Braces?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids need braces for the same reasons as adults \u2013 teeth are crooked, overlapping, overcrowded, or they have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/braces.html\"><b>malocclusion<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a condition in which the upper and lower jaws are different sizes or don\u2019t fit together properly. An <\/span><b>overbite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means the upper jaw is larger or protruding, while an <\/span><b>underbite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means the lower jaw is larger or protruding.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes tooth and jaw problems are the result of premature baby tooth loss, accidents, or habits like prolonged use of pacifiers and baby bottle use or thumb sucking.&nbsp; Most often, though, the need for braces is an inherited trait \u2013 so if you needed braces, it is likely your child may need them as well.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A misaligned bite that isn\u2019t corrected can lead to teeth grinding or TMJ dysfunction and asymmetrical growth of the face, while alignment issues and crooked teeth lead to other potential problems, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"\/services\/family-dentistry\/#GumDisease\"><b>Gum disease<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 Development of gum disease is common when the gums don\u2019t fit securely around the teeth, leaving space for bacteria to grow and flourish.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Difficulty cleaning teeth <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toothbrush bristles and floss have a hard time reaching the areas between misaligned teeth, which also facilitates the growth of bacteria.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Increased risk of injury <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protruding teeth are more likely to be damaged in an accident, or cause damage to your soft tissues, simply because of their placement.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><br><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, children with misaligned teeth may also be teased about their appearance, which can lead to a lack of confidence and lower self-esteem.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Should Kids See an Orthodontist?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no set age for a child\u2019s first visit to an orthodontist, but many orthodontists recommend a visit once the permanent teeth start coming in \u2013 around the age of <\/span><b>seven years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At this age, bite and crowding problems will already be visible. Seeing an orthodontist this early doesn\u2019t necessarily mean a child gets braces immediately but will allow more time for diagnosis and treatment planning well in advance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A common misconception about orthodontics is that you should wait until your child\u2019s teeth and jaws are more fully developed in their early teen years. However, early orthodontic treatment is actually easier and takes less time because it takes advantage of the fact a child\u2019s jaw is still growing into place, so we have an easier time molding it into the ideal shape and alignment. Even with early intervention, however, additional treatment may be needed as the child grows older, but treatment may be shorter and less involved (less expensive, too!) if you take action at a younger age.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Type of Braces Do Kids Need?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An orthodontist is the best resource for deciding when and if a child needs braces and what type of braces or other devices will work \u2013 every child is different. Most kids need traditional braces with brackets, wires, and rubber bands, but braces have improved a great deal over the years to include white or clear ceramic braces that are not as visible as the metal-toned ones of the past \u2013 there are even types of braces that go discreetly behind the teeth (lingual braces).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear plastic aligner trays such as <a href=\"\/services\/orthodontics\/#Invisalign\">Invisalign\u00ae<\/a> are also available, but that type of orthodontics is only appropriate for certain cases. Once braces are on, your child will have to visit the orthodontist or dentist every few weeks for monitoring and adjustments.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Long Do Kids Have to Wear Braces?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No two sets of teeth are alike, so it will depend on the problems your child\u2019s orthodontist or dentist is trying to solve, but the average time a child wears braces is about two years. After their braces come off, your child should wear a retainer to keep the teeth from shifting back to their original places.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Should Kids Care for Their Braces?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy for food to get stuck in metal braces, so kids will have to be extra diligent about keeping them clean. Brushing after meals and flossing daily is very important \u2013 we can provide special flossers or dental picks that make it easier to clean around braces and between teeth.
