Bullies sense this discomfort and annoy, anger, and confuse kids who already feel vulnerable\u2014and if the child being teased is openly reactive, the bullies may choose to step up their efforts.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/about-us\/\">Dr. Barganier, Dr. Zuffi, Dr. Williams, and Dr. McAdams of Carolina Complete Dental Care<\/a> would like to share some <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carypediatricdentistry.com\/frequently-asked-questions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guidelines for positive self-esteem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that our pediatric patients have found helpful. Parents can share these skills, which may help with more than just feelings about their teeth!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Effort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Suggest kids take extra care with their appearance to help them approach situations with more confidence\u2014and remind them they are worth the effort!<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Assertion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Encourage kids to be polite but direct. Consider ways they\u2019ve answered past questions, and prepare to respond to things that might come up again\u2014and to look mean kids straight in the eyes and smile at them, which will surprise the bullies (they feed off negative reactions).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Positive Self-Talk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Tell kids to repeat \u201cI can do this\u201d and similar messages to themselves, even if they don\u2019t quite believe it yet.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Humor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: If your child is comfortable cracking a joke or two, others laughing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them can have positive results\u2014and make sure they are jokes everyone can laugh at without hurting anyone else\u2019s feelings or putting themselves down.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Awareness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Avoid any location their bully or bullies seem to hang out.
