What Are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

A dental crown, also known as a “cap,” is a restoration that covers the entirety of a tooth that protrudes above the gumline. Its job is to protect the tooth while also restoring its form, function, and appearance.

Traditionally, crowns are fabricated in an off-site dental lab. Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) crowns are different. They are made using advanced CAD/CAM technology. The process only takes a few hours, and the end result is just as durable and beautiful as lab-made crowns. Not only does this eliminate the need for a temporary crown, but it also allows you to regain full dental function that much sooner.

The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

To prepare your tooth for a crown, we may need to remove a portion of its enamel. We administer local anesthesia for this process, so you should not notice any extreme discomfort as we work. Once your tooth is properly shaped, we will use digital imaging technology to scan it and the surrounding dentition.

We upload the scan into the CEREC software and design your crown. The design then gets sent to our on-site CEREC machine, which carves the crown out of a single block of dental-grade ceramic. Once the crown is ready, we will verify that it meets our strict quality standards before we permanently attach it to your tooth.

Benefits of CEREC Crowns Vs. Traditional Crowns

CEREC crowns offer some noteworthy advantages over their traditional counterparts:

  • Convenience: You will likely have to make just one trip to our office. This saves you time and minimizes disruptions to your busy routine.
  • No temporary crown: Temporary crowns do not always fit well, and they can fall off relatively easily. CEREC eliminates this inconvenience.
  • Easy and comfortable digital impressions: You will not have to bite on messy impression material. Just let us scan your tooth — the process is fast and surprisingly comfortable!
  • Beautiful results: CEREC crowns are shade-matched to blend in with the natural appearance of your smile. They look seamless even when they replace front teeth!
  • Oral health benefits: CEREC crowns are metal-free, so they do not increase sensitivity or cause potential allergic reactions like metal crowns.
